Shogo – Mobile Armor Division
Monolith Productions

In the wise words of Leeloo "Bigbadaboom":

Now this engine can really shift graphics and nice ones at that. Now Unreal looks nicer, no denying that, but this feels more eye pleasing.

Instead of relying on every special effect in the book this relies on using what is necessary and using it well too. The textures in this game are brilliant, even without Unreal’s multiple texture function they still look nice up close. The Mech’s especially are wonderfully textures with a nice used look, however the best bit has to be the rolling sky and the cloud shadows that go with it. The model’s are nice, especially the Mech’s, even though not a single one of them sports over 600 polygons, this is what allows the engine to move so fast.

The Humans however do look a little odd and even though they are supposed to look like that (Japanese cartoon appearance) it does bother you a little. All the special effects are nice and over the top, most impressive being the shots from the Juggernaut or the Red Riot’s explosion which is totally awesome. The levels are all lovely too, however they are a little similar, sometimes if it wasn’t for the elevation you could swear that it was the same all the time. Apart from the slight repeating of the textures in the Mech levels, this game has got the looks and has no problem moving them around.
