Requiem
Cyclone Studios / 3DO

I can’t quite place it:

The graphics engine used in Requiem is odd to say the least. It’s a bit like Shogo’s yet without the coloured lighting, it has a something in common with Quake’s yet it’s more detailed and can deal with outdoor areas. Ok, well it’s fast, the textures are highly detailed, the animation is very good.

Also it loads levels the same way as Half-Life and the missions do have a little link from one to the next thanks to this. The enemies you meet are good, definatly better than anything in Quake 1 or 2 when it comes to detail, and movement, this is something special which 3DO are trying to use as a pick up line. It basically has the same animation idea as Half-Life (skeletal frame inside the body) this allows the animation to be much smoother but whether it is better than half-Life I can’t really say, it’s almost exactly the same. The weapons are well drawn and they to are animated well, however the explosions are terrible, no-one who saw them really liked them although they are better than Quake 2’s mini nukes. So while the graphics are fairly lovely there are alot of flaws, shadows that appear a level below the character they are supposed to be connected to.

This often resulted in you seeing this shadow running across the wall while the actual guy is above you, another thing is that the collision detection seems to be "off" at times. There are quite a few errors, no big ones but there is the occasional "have to jump to get off the step" affairs. This is usually because you are to far to the left or right though, there is also alot of objects passing through other objects and you can occasional get caught on a dead body part. Errors aside though the graphics are pretty flawless and definatly pleasing, the best has to be the various human units, especially the armoured ones.
