Half-Life
Valve/Sierra

Done to Death:

First things first, this game has been reviewed by pretty much every other site by now and all of them have given it roughly the same score. This is one of the (very) rare times that we all agree on something; Half-Life is the single greatest single player experience since Doom. Thinking back to the last time the gaming community felt like this and you realise just how long it has been. I heard about this game that was supposed to be good, a sort of seminal follow up to Wolfenstein, well I loved that so I thought I would love this game too. I got hold of it for the first time from a Shareware CD which could be bought in the shops, I got it and when I got home, I put the CD in and there it was, Doom: episode 1.

I can’t remember how many times I played it all the way through but i’m sure it was over 10, the atmosphere was superb and at times it actually startled you, I thought to myself "I have to get the whole thing. Unfortunately I never got the chance, until Doom 2 came out, I bought it the day it came out, and spent a couple of days hammering away at it. One of my friends came with me when I bought it, he saw it and spent the next week almost living in my house, just so he could play this game. After four days of playing the game constantly after school we had finished it on the hardest setting and felt happy. Since then games have come and gone, Dark Forces drew me in with it’s excellent levels and Star Wars universe, but the next game to really grab me was Duke Nukem 3D with it’s wacky sense of perverted humour and thrilling levels.
