Get Medieval
Monolith

Gauntlet, why did we like it??

What we have here in the case of Get Medieval is an undeniable Gauntlet clone. However seeing as the game it is cloning has come and gone (name the last top down shoot em up you played hey?) it has an obvious technological advantage.

But there are the nostalgics out there who think that the original of whatever game type they like is the best. Meaning that even if this is better, that it can’t be as good as the original, well sorry to break it to you but the mind has a large tendency to make memories seem better than they actually were. If you need an example, think back to Doom, it ruled, the levels were brilliant and it looked lovely, ok, finished with that, now play it.

You see, when you go back to them (ignore nostalgia here) they are ugly, small, and very erm flat, the same goes for this genre which still hasn’t made the crossover. Another problem is that some genres died with the advent of 3D Acceleration and High Spec computers, The RPG disappeared for a while but it’s coming back now, thanks to FF7 no doubt, same as the adventure, which is also coming back. Hardest hit was the Side Scrolling shooter and the top down shooter, Think about it, why have R-Type when you have Freespace or X-wing, why have Gauntlet when you can have Shogo or Unreal or Quake 2.

But some people don’t want the genre to die; I personally like them because of the teamplay aspect, without the need of a network, Alien Breed 2 for example, anyway, how does a game like this fare in these modern times then.
