Freespace - the Great War

Da da dadada DAAAA DA:

Freespace has pleasing sounds, most are appropriate, especially the afterburner sound when it kicks in (and the little shudder it causes). The craft, be it your’s or other’s all hum away like they should (Although sound can’t travel in space, but ignore that). However I did notice that the alien ships have sounds ripped straight out of Independence Day, just listen as a Scorpion flies past, or when it fires, hmmm, suspicious. Copied sounds aside, they are good, if just a little too quiet, especially a capital ship explosion, it should have more "beef" to it. The music however is the usual rubbish you get in space games, the only exception to the rule is X-wing vs Tie-fighter’s music which is good, but even then I don’t want it in flight so why do they bother.

Bank, roll, spin, crash, die:

The gameplay is all here, Freespace has the best space battles out of all the games of it’s type although they aren’t as epic as X-wings’s huge battles. What makes it fun is that you have to work for the kill and the fact that you are so useless against capital ships, and the storyline which unfolds is a help as are the missions which are well set up and not too repeative.
