Freespace - the Great War
Star Wars somewhere else:
Freespace started out in a strange way being called Descent: Freespace, because some
people thought that it was related to Descent. The only connection I could find is that its
made by a company that is an offspring from Parallax, called Volition. The other half of
Parallax are doing the Descent one people, Descent 3 will be among us soon. But this is
Freespace, a space game meant to take on the mighty X-wing/Tie-fighter games and the dodgy
yet still popular Wing Commander. The story line is the same as Wing Commander Prophacy,
almost exactly the same so I wont bother telling you about it. One of the things
they are most proud of though is the sheer sense of scale your supposed to feel from the
Sheer scale of the thing. Does it work though?
Like Leia in the Golden Bikini:
One of the things that this game isnt
is ugly, the textures are brilliant, the explosions are awesome, by far the best ive
seen, the engine burn effect is nice, the ships are detailed enough too, although some are
uglier then hell.
Generally the game is beutiful with lots of
the modern graphic splendours we expect. However the graphic style isnt flawless,
the big ships can get confusing and are rather plain, and it all seems a bit too dark. At
least they got the colour of space right unlike some games. It moves along nicely too with
no obvious lag and the last level has one of the most confusing but nice effects yet seen
in a game. Oh and finally someone got glare into a space game with a bright white screen
developing the closer you turn to the sun. Although I did notice a slight absence of
planets, strange when you consider that the whole thing goes on in a solar system.
