Interview with Alexander Garden
Relic Entertainment
CRUS: Who is your idol in
the computer industry ?
ALEX: Idol is a very strong word, but if I had to pick one person, I'd
say
Peter Molyneux. His commitment to gamers, and innovation put him heads and shoulders
above the crowd.
CRUS: Don Mattrick over on EA once told you; "To succeed in business
you must learn what you are good at , assume you are bad at everything else, and then hire
the people that you need to do the things that you are bad at and get the hell out of
their way". What is your part in Homeworld then ?
ALEX: I was involved in the design and some of the programming on
Homeworld. As the director of Relic, my job is to make sure everyone is happy and everyone
has all the tools they need to do their job effectively. I also oversee all the
content in our games and ensure it meets the exacting levels of quality we set for
ourselves. On the less business side, I have to negotiate all our corporate deals,
and work with our partners in other companies to ensure Relic develops strategic
relationships that allow us to grow as a company.
CRUS: We who have read the previews out on the Internet know what
Homeworld is about. But there is still some people that don't know what the game is about.
Enlighten them!
ALEX: Homeworld is the epic story of a race of people making a journey
across the galaxy to reclaim their lost birthright. Millions of years ago, your
people were banished from their home planet and exiled to a desolate world on the outer
edge of your galaxy. Homeworld is the story of your journey from your planet of
exile to your Homeworld and the things that your encounter along the way.
