Enhanced
performance, value and reliability for workstation, performance desktop, and server PCs
Highlights
Enhanced performance
Average seek time of 8.5 ms and minimum sustained data rates of 5.1 MB/sec. (4.3 GB) and
5.0 MB/sec (2.1 GB) provide the performance needed to meet today's data-intensive
application requirements.
Superior capacity
1.44 GB per platter capacity enhances performance in a broad range of workstation, desktop
and server PC applications.
Low power dissipation
Through efficient electronic design, combined with IBM leading disk drive technology, the
Ultrastar 2ES significantly enhances value and reliability.
Improved data performance
PRML digital data channel delivers increased media-to-buffer and buffer transfer rates for
performance leadership.
Enhanced SCSI storage performance
Ultra-SCSI interface delivers the high-throughput capabilities required by workstations,
high-performance desktop PCs, entry servers, and LAN servers.
Data protection
S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) protocol support protects
data availability and helps alert a system of impending drive failure.
Leading drive technology
The Ultrastar 2ES drive achieves its reliability, performance and cost-effectiveness by
taking advantage of IBM's development and implementation experience in advanced disk drive
technologies. These technologies include Magneto-Resistive heads, No-ID sector formatting,
and the Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) digital channel.
MR heads offer increased areal density, reducing the number of disks and heads required
for a given capacity. No-ID sector formatting further increases storage capacity by
eliminating the overhead caused by the duplicate storage of each data sector's ID field
onto the disk, creating more available disk space for customer data. The PRML digital
channel now implemented on IBM's newest desktop drives such as the Ultrastar 2ES allows
for higher areal densities and significantly enhances the drive's overall performance.
The combination of these three leading technologies, along with the proven electronic
design of the Ultrastar 2ES, provides the performance and reliability to meet today's
performance desktop, workstation and server storage requirements, while delivering
superior value.
SCAM-2 (SCSI configured automatically) compliant
Ultrastar 2ES drives support the implementation of SCAM-2. This support increases the
user's productivity by simplifying and improving the installation and configuration of
SCSI disk drives.
Interface
To accommodate different system requirements, the Ultrastar 2ES drives are available
with an Ultra-SCSI interface (SCSI-3 Fast-20) in multiple configurations: 50-pin
Single-ended, 68-pin Single-ended Wide, and 80-pin SCA-2 Single-ended Wide.
