Cyrix 586 MediaGX and motherboard Performance: The performance of the Cyrix MGX is, well, poor to say at least. With a Business Winstone98 score of 8.2 when a Pentium MMX scores about 14 Business marks. But then again the MGX is cheap. So if you're after killer performance in desktop applications or in games you should look elsewhere. About the tests: The tests was conducted with 64MB's of SDRAM RAM, a clean formatted IDE harddrive with a fresh-installed Windows 98 with the resolution set to 800*600 and 16bit's colour depth. The software side of the installation was rather painless. Since the OS does not immediately recognise the XpressGRAPHICS type video setup, you will have to start out with the plain VGA drivers built in to Windows. Then, you'll need to install the GX drivers that come with the board. The installation is easy. The only hitch we found with the driver disk is that it asked for the Windows CD-ROM for files. It must be a bug in the install program, because the only way it will work is to select the install directory and click OK. Overall, this is no big deal. |
