Have you been looking for a sound card that works fine
under Dos and in the same time sounds like the profesional sound cards. And what would you
say if this card costs under a hundred bucks. Well you would probably say. What are you
talking about.. Is there really a soundcard that can do all this ? Yes of course there is
and it is called Soundblaster AWE 64 Value Edition.
I have tested both the Gold version and the value edition and I cant find any reasons
for buying the Gold version. The Gold version has a SPD/IF connector for capturing digital
audio straight from CDs, but who actually uses that one. Not me anyway.
The value edition does have a built in amplifier and that makes the card a tad noisier
than the Gold version. The Gold card also has 4MB of onboard RAM for samples and the Value
version has only 512KB. The soundcard costs just a little bit more then a Soundblaster 16
but the sound is much better. So if you should get a soundcard that has great sound and
the price should be low then go out and get this card.
Of course, this card has a somewhat limited life. Next year's Power computers may not
have ISA slots at all, and the AWE-64 Value Edition is still an ISA card.
