3Dfx Voodoo2
The Voodoo2 (V2) is 3Dfx's
follow up to their critically acclaimed Voodoo Graphics chipset (VGC) and has been adopted
by a number of major board vendors.
Just like the VGC these cards use a
pass-thru cable solution where you hook up your 2D board to the V2 accelerator and then
hook it up to your monitor. When a program makes a call to the V2 board it overrides the
signal from the 2D card and then displays it's own full-screen image.
One of the limitations to the original VGC
is still present in the V2, it can't render in a window hence it's useless for 3D
applications like 3D Studio, Lightwave and AutoCAD that requires a simultaneous 2D
display.
The V2 features dual texture management
units (TMUs) for single-pass tri-linear filtering or light/bump-mapping. Running at 90Mhz
(compared to 50Mhz for the VGC) the V2 performance up to three times faster than VGC based
cards.
